Many herbs naturally repel mosquitoes.

You’ve likely heard of citronella, but did you know that garlic, lemongrass, cedarwood, basil, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, rosemary, thyme, onions, and marigolds also deter them? You can cut down on the mosquitoes in your garden by planting these herbs around your stoep or deck.

In addition to growing the herbs, throw some on the braai as burning herbs whilst you are braai-ing can significantly reduce mosquito infestation during the evening.

If you have an old mosquito repellent plug in device - cut an orange peel to the exact size of the rectangular inserts normally used in the mosquito plug-in device. Then, use the peel in place of the insert. Your home smells great when you use an orange peel mosquito repellent and stays mosquito free. Plus, you won’t have to worry about breathing in toxic chemicals.

How to Make Mosquito Spray From Dried or Fresh Herbs

Fresh or Dried Herbs Bug Spray Ingredients

Witch hazel or rubbing alcohol

Dried herbs: peppermint, spearmint, citronella, lemongrass, catnip, lavender. I recommend using at least one herb from the mint family.

Fresh or Dried Herbs Mosquito Spray

Instructions

Boil 1 cup of water and add 3-4 TBSP of dried herbs total in any combination from the above.

Use 1 Tablespoon of Essential oils of either peppermint, spearmint, catnip, any mints or lavender, and also throw in a couple of dried cloves.

Mix well, cover and let cool (covering is important to keep the volatile oils in!)

Strain herbs out and mix water with 1 cup of witch hazel or rubbing alcohol. Store in a spray bottle in a cool place (fridge is great because then it’s nice and cool!)
